It takes a lot of people to keep the trains running. Trains themselves need looking after, as do the machines that look after the trains and the buildings where the trains 'live'. Then there's the track - known since time out of mind as the 'Permanent Way', it takes many hands and many skills to keep it that way. Technology and electrification also call upon a new set of skills, as do the demands for ever safer signalling. All these areas require safety-conscious technical support and with training, hard work and ambition technical and engineering career progression can be swift.
